Villa Vitellino is the farmhouse, dating back to the 18th century, has been lovingly restored into five self-contained apartments yet maintaining its original characteristics. Terracotta floors, exposed timber beams, hand painted tiles, antique furniture and comfortable beds are just some of the features appreciated by our guests. There are five tastefully furnished apartments of different sizes. Each has its own fully-equipped kitchen, bathroom, television, central heating and terrace. Some also have an open fireplace.

The Etruscan name for Cortona, “Curtun” can be read on the base of a bronze housed in the Museo dell’Accademia Etrusca since the eighteenth century. Approaching the town (494 metres) from the valley, we are struck by its urban layout, stretching along the slope of the mountain ridge that separates the Vaidichiana from the Valtiberina.

The importance of the Etruscan city, witnessed by the scale of its wall circle, was related to the economic and productive situation of an area which was considerably fertile even in ancient times, and to its strategic location within the road network of the Vaidichiana, at the junction of two major routes linking Arezzo to Perugia and the Valtiberina to the Tyrrhenian coast.

Myths about the foundation of Cortona were numerous and widespread from as far back as the fifth century BC; they were collected by Herodotus, and further elaborated in the Roman period by Dionysius of Helicarnassus and by Virgil. Recent archaeological studies have clarified the previously uncertain outlines of Etruscan Cortona. The extant ancient monuments – the most famous being the First and Second Tumulus of Sodo, the Tumulus of Camucia, the Tanella of Pitagora, the Tanella Angori and the Tomb of Mezzavia – are all comprised within the Archaeological Park of Cortona, already largely open for visits.

The Museo dell’Accademia Etrusca e della Città di Cortona, in Palazzo Casali, brings together the Museo dell’Accademia Etrusca, founded in the eighteenth century and celebrated for its bronze Etruscan lamp, and the spacious new Museo della Città Etrusca e Romana di Cortona, set up by the Cortona Town Council, which houses the recently discovered Tabula Cortonensis.

Ingredients:

150 grams of bread without crust
4 tablespoons red wine vinegar
3 cloves of garlic
2 tablespoons capers
1 small jar of tomato sauce
4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
salt, pepper, parsley
bread for canapes

Preparation:

Soak the bread with vinegar so that it remains well impregnated. Then squeeze and mix with garlic, chopped capers, tomato and parsley. Add as much extra virgin olive oil until you get a soft dough. Salt and pepper. Before you spread it on toast let it stand for about 1 hour.

“Palazzo Passerini” is a palace of the thirteenth century. And located outside the City and above the town square was originally called the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo. Originally embattled and crowned by a tower which was located on the field for the assemblies. This name hard ‘until 1411 when with the purchase of common by the Florentine Republic was to drop the post of Captain of the People. In 1512 to win his sympathy was donated by the city to Silvio Passerini, having been appointed the same date display of Leo X Medici da Cortona which then depended. Passerini imposed displacement of the field of meetings and enriched the palace with frescoes and stained glass. In the coming years underwent numerous changes and additions so today is quite difficult to read the original appearance, although this still remains one of the most fascinating buildings in Cortona.

Bread with pine nut sauce

Ingredients:

10 Slices of white bread per person

2 Handfuls of basil

2 Handfuls of parsley

2 Cloves of garlic

1 Tablespoon grated parmesan cheese

50 Grams of anchovies in oil

30 Grams chopped pine nuts

Olive oil

Preparation:

Do finely chopped basil, parsley and garlic, stir in the Parmesan and chopped pine nuts, add oil flush slowly until you have a sauce quite substantial. Spread the sauce over bread and heat 3/4 minutes in oven at 200 º C. Serve immediately.

It’s a characteristic middle age tower, it’s origins can be leaded up around the year 1000 A.C. (The building is rises nearby the Etruscan town of Cortona). We wanted to give it the name of Dardano by the way the legend tells that this mythological character was the founder of Cortona and that from here he left to found Troy. And from there Enea left to arrive in Italy and give the birth to Rome. (That’s the reason of the popular proverb saying that Cortona is the mum of Troy and the grandma of Roma). The building has been accurately reconstructed in a way to be comfortable for living. At the first floor we find a large kitchen/living roomwith a typical fireplace made of stone with at the center sculptured a coat of arms of the Cardinal Passerini: a glorious coat for Cortona proving that this building was probably property of that famous Cardinal, State secretary and counselor of Pope Leone X of Medici.
